Days 3–6: thermophilic hold. The step that matters for biosecurity is sustaining 55-65°C for a minimum of 72 consecutive hours, as this inactivates pathogens and weed seeds. Open windrow piles typically fail at this stage due to uneven turning, which leaves cold spots that never reach a lethal temperature, resulting in inconsistent kill rates from batch to batch.

 

Day 7: cooling and maturation. As the available organic matter is consumed, microbial activity slows and the pile cools to between 40 and 50 °C. This leaves a stable, non-phytotoxic organic fertiliser that is ready for field application or storage.
